Redesign of USC's School of Visual Art and Design Documents & Publications

Mission

Redesign the University of South Carolina School of  Visual Art and Design Graduate Handbook to improve readability, flow, and reader attention. Design five external flyers for promotion of each of the SVAD majors that is both engaging and align with USC brand standards.

Research and Process

I created a modern and sleek upgrade to an already existing set of text and brand identity. To start this redesign, I sketched page layout and text arrangement options. While working within the constraints of a brand identity, I took a more artistic approach to page layout to emulate the artistic environment of SVAD’s Graduate School. I also chose to use one of USC’s sans serif typefaces, Gotham for most of the headings to complement my modern approach to page layout and design.

This project did not just involve page layout; it also required knowledge of working with text. Most of the copy in this publication is from the previous Graduate Handbook but is simplified, shortened, and spell-checked. I also added a consistent formula of headings and subheadings as well as a consistent use of typefaces, which the previous design lacked. While still staying on brand, this new handbook improves both readability and legibility of type and is more likely to hold a Graduate Student’s attention.

A similar approach was used for the SVAD Undergraduate Flyers as they needed to remain “on brand” while also feeling modern, new, and engaging for prospective students. These designs also involved extensive sketching before moving to InDesign to complete the layout and input the information. I also chose the Gotham typeface for the title of each document and primarily used garnet, black, and white so these documents were cohesive with my other designs for SVAD. Elements like the Gotham typeface, large banner image, and dotted lines make these flyers engaging for students while also working in the USC brand system with the use of colors, typefaces, and logos.

Outcomes

These projects resulted in engaging print materials for the School of Visual Art and Design graduate and prospective students to understand and navigate information effectively.

Personal Reflection

These projects meant a lot to me because they are pieces of my work that were able to be in the hands of users. As a designer, there is no better feeling than people interacting with your work. It was important for me to represent the School of Visual Art and Design in a positive and fun way, and I enjoyed thinking back on my time as a prospective student and the content that I would have wanted to see from an Art School.
